Why You Eat More, If Your Diet Consists of Processed Foods

In a report published in the journal Cell Metabolism experts compared differences in calorie consumptions between unprocessed and ultra-processed diets. Even when the diets matched in fat content those who were eating ultra-processed diets still ate more food and gained more weight.

Consumption of ultra-processed foods have been associated with obesity and poor health in multiple studies.

Ultra-processed diets tend to have foods in them that are calorically dense and with less water content. Therefore, those on that diet find the foods less satisfying and satiating.

So why do you eat more on those diets?

One possible reason is the speed you eat. In the study those eating the ultra-processed foods were eating faster and then in turn started to overeat. There have been multiple studies done that showed chewing longer and mindfulness are effective tactics for weight loss. Eating fast means eating more — more food, more calories and too much fuel at the end of the day that can’t be burned off.

So, what can you do?

If you want to minimize your intake of processed food, aim to do more food prep and cooking ay home. Eating processed food in moderation is fine, but avoid those with a lot of added sugar, fat and sodium.
