Are Smoothies Really That Good For You?

Yes and no. Smoothies are a great way for you to get many nutrients in one drink such as, vitamin B, C and D, and they contain a good balance of carbohydrates, protein and beneficial fats as a nutritious meal substitute or snack. Don’t think that adding ingredients like peanut butter, ice cream, sugars and fruit juices will help your diet. When you add these ingredients your once nutritious alternative can be causing weight gain and putting you at risk for diabetes.

Additionally, packing all those fruits and vegetables into one meal seems great but can that actually be hurting us? A study by researchers at Purdue University found that drinking beverages instead of eating solid food is having you take in more calories and feeling more hungry by the end.   So why do people insist they can help your weight loss plan? If you make them right with low-fat, low-calorie, low-sugar foods you will get a healthy smoothie.

Here are some reasons why your smoothie diet is making you gain weight:

  • It’s too big. Again, you are taking in more calories than what you want to be in order to lose weight.
  • It contains excessive sugar. Adding too many fruits, creams or nuts can make it taste even better, but all that sugar is adding up.
  • It leaves you tired and hungry. Drinking more sugar than you realize, spikes up your blood sugar. If done right your smoothie should make you feel reenergized and healthy.
  • You are drinking it at the wrong time. Drinking a smoothie to start your day sounds like a good way to have breakfast, but you haven’t been active yet and your body can’t process all that sugar.

If you make them right with low-fat, low-calorie, low-sugar foods incorporating smoothies in your diet can be beneficial, but be sure you are still getting the correct servings of fruits and vegetables without adding extra sugars.
