Enter the digital age.  Modern scale technology uses a load cell to perform the weighing process, providing instant weight measurement on an easy-to-read digital display.  A load cell is a transducer that is used to create an electrical signal whose magnitude is directly proportional to the force being measured.  They can be calibrated to a high level of accuracy, and since they have no moving parts this accuracy is maintained for a much longer life.

Tanita introduced the world’s first digital beam scale in 2004, incorporating a standard load cell design within a footprint that duplicated the traditional mechanical beam scale.  Clinics were soon pulling out their old outdated mechanical beam scales and replacing them with a digital version.  Nurses found this new design much easier to use, and due to their near instantaneous measuring capability productivity increased 10 fold, reducing weigh-in times an average of 30 seconds per patient.
