Exercise Attacks Visceral Fat

Exercise Attacks Visceral Fat

Research shows that exercise helps the body reduce dangerous fat around your internal organs as effectively as medication meant to do the same can, according to a recent study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings  https://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org/article/S0025-6196(18)30854-1/abstract.

Researchers looked at 17 previously published studies including more than 3,600 participants to determine whether exercise or pharmacological therapy was more effective at reducing visceral adipose tissue (VAT), the harmful fat that surrounds your internal organs.  The analysis revealed that exercise interventions were associated with a greater relative reduction in visceral fat compared with pharmacological interventions.

Losing visceral fat is important as it will reduce your risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers.  Researchers believe VAT can up your risk of these kinds of conditions by increasing the volume of blood circulating and releasing inflammatory proteins, which can clog your arteries and up your risk of heart disease.

Following the American Heart Association’s recommendation for 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity exercise is a good place to start.  To more effectively attack visceral fat, try incorporating a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) routine rather than just endurance training.  Research has found that HIIT is more effective than cardio at burning visceral fat
