What Is CBD And How Does It Help?

Cannabidiol also known and CBD has become more and more popular in the media, and people have been told to start adding it in their post-workout smoothie or their morning coffee, but why? What is CBD?

Cannabidiol is the second most active ingredient of cannabis (marijuana) and CBD is an essential component of medical marijuana. While CBD is a component of marijuana by itself it does not cause a “high” In fact according to the World Health Organization it doesn’t indicate any abuse or dependence potential, so what does it do?

CBD has been touted for a wide variety of health issues, but the most scientific evidence for its effectiveness is treating childhood epilepsy syndromes, such as Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, these two typically don’t respond to antiseizure medications. Recently the FDA approved the first ever cannabis-derived medicine for these conditions which contains CBD.

But is it safe?

Like most medications there are side effects, and CBD is known to cause some. As of now CBD is sold as a supplement and not a medication. Since the FDA does not regulate dietary supplements you cannot know for the product you buy has active ingredients at the dose listed.

For now, more research needs to be done regarding the health benefits and side effects of CBD, but it can possibly be an option for managing anxiety, insomnia and chronic pain.
